Stop-smoking seminar.  
There are those who ask, "Can a person really stop smoking as the result of a group seminar?" Our answer is always, "Of course, a group seminar can help a person stop smoking, if the person has the motivation to do whatever it takes to be a non-smoker.  Hypnosis is the tool that amplifies the effectiveness of his or her habit change."

What we realize is that this very question demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of the nature of the unconscious mind and of hypnosis, specifically.  Hypnosis is a powerful tool of personal transformation, but, as with any tool, the person must take the time to learn and master it.  For example, a person who has heard about someone who has swung a hammer would not be considered  a carpenter. Also, one would not use a hammer for every job that involves joining two pieces of material.  You need to use other tools, such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, routers, etc.

The unconscious mind is where all your habits, helpful and not so helpful, are stored.  While there are other tools (some might suggest the patch, the gum, the herb lobelia, etc.) that can help a person be smoke free, it is a simple fact that if one wants to remain permanently smoke free, he or she must change all of the habits that are associated with smoking.  Some kind of behavior modification is required.  Otherwise, the old habits that trigger the smoking response may be activated.  Hypnosis, especially when reinforced with on-going self-hypnosis, is a most powerful process of behavior modification.

Thus, in addition to the hypnotic sessions, the ethical and well-planned hypnosis seminar teaches the participants how to continue the process of transformation that they have initiated during the seminar.  This is accomplished by instruction in and practice of self-hypnotic techniques.

At On Purpose Institute we combine waking instruction, with methods during the hypnotic session to enhance Whole-Mind Learning, thus accelerating the individual's learning process. The result is that the vast majority of our participants throw away their cigarettes, lighters, and tobacco as they leave the seminar.

Even with this response, throughout the seminar we emphasize the importance of reinforcement.  You might want to refer to the reinforcement section of this website to gain a keen appreciation of this important aspect of any permanent change.

 
Weight Loss seminar
At the beginning of weight loss seminars we tell the participants, "I hope you are not disappointed to hear that at the end of this two-and-one-half- hour seminar you will not be twenty pounds lighter."  We hear good natured comments, such as, "No, I want my money back," or, "Will I be forty pounds lighter, then?"  Then we follow up, by saying, "That's the bad news.  The good news is that you will have several powerful tools that will allow you to program yourself for success in attaining and maintaining the ideal weight--the ideal body size for you."  

We have had report from a participants that after they left the seminar, they did not feel particularly different.  They "just" noticed that their habits were somewhat different.  One woman reported that the next day she took her children to a pizza parlor, where in the past she had usually had four pieces of pizza, out of boredom, without enjoying them very much.  After the seminar she found herself having only one piece, "chewing it very slowly, and enjoying it thoroughly."  After that one piece she had no more desire for the pizza.  She realized that she had put herself in control of the foods and the quantities of the foods she put in her body.  She was able to meet her weight loss goals in a timely and healthy manner.  Maybe even more importantly she has used the reinforcemant processes to maintain her healthy weight for the past four years since the seminar.

We have had reports from participants that they found themselves changing other aspects of their eating and health habits.  One of the reminders we give to participants while in the state of hypnosis is, "This best exercise for you is the exercise you will do."  When delivered to the unconscious mind in the state of hypnosis, it seems to have the power to eliminate the blocks some people place in the way of exercise.  Without difficulty they begin to add a little extra exercise to their lives each day until they are surprised to find themselves exercising a half hour every day.

Weight management, of course, requires the client to do more than "think fat away."  there are many fine books today that go into much detail about the current understanding of the functioning of the body.  On Purpose Institute has no conflict with any well-thought-out and healthy method of eating We prefer not to use the term "diet," because that word had the connotation of being a temporary way of eating, which implies the person will lose the desired weight and then go back to the old ways (usually gaining all the weight lost and then some.  Remember, if you go back to what you have been doing, you will get what you have been getting.) Therefore, we do not recommend one way of eating over another.  There are consequences to each plan that the person needs to be aware of.  

We see our role as providing the tools people need to stay the course.  Hypnosis is a powerful way for a person to program him- or herself for success in any worthwhile endeavor, especially in attaining and maintaining the ideal weight.  It is also apparent that your understanding of the need for reinforcement is even more important in this area than in any other. So, if you have not already checked out the reinforcement section, now would be a good time.
